Comments about Icom IC-M700PROMarine SSB Radio:
This is a great radio for the offshore cruiser. Mine is 10 years old, and other than requiring a new antenna connector [$], it has never missed a beat. I don't think the bear hunter reviewer owns one of these, judging by his comments. I use mine primarily for email, weather grib files (with an SCS Modem), and for checking in on the various HF nets around the world. It only transmits on full power, so it may use a little more power than other units. Amongst the cruising community, these dedicated marine units are known to be rock solid. They are not waterproof as the bear hunter claims, and are only suitable for a very protected location, but mine did survive a leaky port, with only a corroded antenna connector. Very easy to hook up to your computer/modem for simple digital control. If space is a problem, get the M802 which can have the front panel mounted separately from the big box. They can be modified to work on the HAM bands, if you have the license, but if you plan to do mostly HAM communications, buy a dedicated HAM unit, and modify it for Marine SSB use.
