Comments about Furuno GP1710C 7" Color LCD GPS/Chart Plotter - Navionics Cartography:
I have owned Lowrance, Eagle, Garmin, and Ray GPS units before purchasing the discontinued Furuno 1710C Navnet. Furuno stopped making this model, apparently the problems I'm having were all too common. The problem is that my unit will not take the waypoints from the GPSU (available separately at additional cost) PC program, so I would have to enter all waypoints by hand. If you've ever tried to manage hundreds of waypoints, keying all those waypoints and routes in one at a time is a terrible experience. The other brands that I've owned are far easier to manage data. Also needed is the special, unique data cable, so add [$] to your bill for that.If you want to write your own chips, add [$] for the very special proprietory card reader. Don't forget to get a blank chip, unique to Furuno...When this problem was discovered, I spent hours on the phone with their tech support, and the best that the factory could do for me was to send a data chip with my data written to it, meaning my data was good, my process was good, my 1710C unit was bad, because it will not upload from my pc. Factory refused to repair or replace my defective 1710C. Other functions of the unit seem OK, but I'm still learning to operate all of it's features. Another difficulty, have not been able to get the NMEA 183 networking to operate properly yet, and the operator's manual is very weak in those instructions as well.Recommendation: look for a current production model or another brand with easy to use data uploads/downloads, and offering plug-and-play connections.
