I got this to finally go deep sea fishing this coming Summer, I have used similar setup before while living in another state so I don't have to have a fish on hook to know what it is I have.
Should be adequate for my trip off shore as well as fishing from cliffs and peers along the coast.
Reel has a restraining clamp that wraps over the rod, giving it extra rigid mount and stability, something I don't recall having on my previous setup of same nature and size.
This will be a blast to fish with, I am very pleased with value for the money.

The first rod came with a defective tip guide. The bottom half was gone leaving a very sharp edge that would cut the line. An E-M to Boaters World got me free returns and a very quick replacement which seems fine. I have the same reel on another rod that I use for deep jigging cod and haddock in Maine, NH and Mass. and it is excellant. I won't use this now until spring so.........

This combo was a pretty good deal at [$]a while back. The reel itself is nice and of quality construction. We recently used this for trolling dorado down in Baja and it held up very well. Several dorado were caught using this bad boy. I changed the rod and matched it with a roller tip Seeker "rockcod" rod that easily could be used for any big fish and not just dorado. The rod (Penn Slammer) that this originally came with had an issue where the inside ceramic ring of the eyelet at the tip was missing. I didn't realize this until it was too late and there was nothing that Boatersworld could do about it. So I brought it to a local tackle shop and had them fix it. I matched the rod with my Saltist 40 - it held up pretty nicely as well and several dodos were caught on this setup. Overall, I'm satisfied with the purchase.

a nice, short and stiff pole perfect for catching large fish off a boat, the reel is super high quality and works great! I use this on my 14ft boat, its much easier to maneuver then some of those larger poles, and could handle one nice fish.

I pulled up an 80Lb brown shark on one of these Penn combos last weekend. I strung each rod with 60 lb mono test. After a 45 minute fight the rod and reel held up great! I would highly recommend these rods for anything from 10lb blues to the shark that I caught. Great buy for the price!

Just tested my new combo slamming big Blues and Stripers off Ct. The reel is a workhorse, the rod is sensitive but bends easily under a big Blue or Striper. However, it held up fine and I caught alot of fish. Can't wait to take it to the Gulf Stream.

Reel is very very nice. It's a Penn 4/0 Senator, Nuf said. The rod however. Looks nice. feels nice. but not much good when the eye inserts pop out. lost 2 of them on the 3rd trip. the tip top and one of the middle guide inserts popped out and left me hangin'.

Great combination of power with this rod/reel combination. The reel is a classic Penn with a really smooth drag. The rod fits very well with the reel and has plenty of backbone to fight a really aggressive fish. You truely can't go wrong with this setup. You might find a rod and reel that is this smooth, tough and dependable for hundreds of dollars more. But my question is, why would anyone want to....... unless you just have money to burn? Trust me, this is a truely a piece of fishing gear that will give you a lifetime of enjoyment.

I think there is just nothing sweeter than a big fat semi stiff fishing pole with a big fat Penn reel on it. This is my first since I was a kid, and I have to say, I think it is an excellent value. Even at only 6'6" it's a little difficult to transport in the car, but well worth it when you lay it to the water. The rod feels sure and solid and what can you say about the reel? As always the Penn reel feels well built and duarable and is dependable
