Comments about Lowrance Lowrance HDS-8 Insight USA Multifunction Fishfinder/Chartplotter w/ 50/200 kHz Transducer:
I purchased the HDS-8 with Insight USA. Insight USA feature has extremely poor resolution in Alaska. All you see when you zoom in with shaded relief engaged (Insight USA) is highly pixelated to the point of being a blob. It has no use whatsoever. The Sonar feature is a little disappointing too. The text on the screen using the Lowrance base map shows the fathom numbers in very tiny text. Hard to read even with bifocals. I also purchased the Navionics Platinum chip for Alaska, installed the software update, then the chip. All seemed OK until you are trying to use the Navionics base map and start looking for fathom readings. They don't exist anywhere. When you zoom out you do start seeing some interesting items...pink flamingos. Not real useful though. I have tried to contact Lowrance and Navionics to find a solution, so far they have not responded. I cannot recommend anyone else purchase either the Lowrance HDS-8 or the Navionics Platinum for Alaska. Way too many bugs in the software. Stick with Garmin.
