I used this reel with an 8.5' surf rod in for surf fishing on Harbor Island, SC. Casts well with 1 lb whiting and other small fish for bait, smooth retrieval, and quiet. I loaded it with 20 lb test monofilament and landed a 4.5' shark with no problem - the drag worked perfectly and was easy to adjust. The extra spool is a nice bonus.
